Step of the Month: Step Two

Second Step Prayer
Heavenly Father, I am having trouble with personal relationships. I can’t control my emotional nature. I am prey to misery and depression. I can’t make a living. I feel useless. I am full of fear. I am unhappy. I can’t seem to be of real help to others. I know in my heart that only you can restore me to sanity if I am just willing to stop doubting your power. I humbly ask that you help me to understand that it is more powerful to believe than not to believe and that you are either everything or nothing.

One of Our Client’s Shares Their Experience with Step Two:

Addiction is an illness which only a spiritual experience can conquer. This means we have to stop thinking that we can control every aspect of our lives. In active addiction we are megalomaniacs with delusions of grandeur under the impression we have vast omnipotence. However, in reality we have very little power and our egos blind us from seeing how inferior we actually are. This is why it is of the utmost importance to believe in something bigger than ourselves, our higher power….

If you were raised with any kind of organized religion, you will probably have an easier time believing in an omniscient/omnipotent God. God is in complete control, but you may think as though your addiction has made you stray from God’s grace. If you consider yourself atheist or agnostic, then you’ll have to find a different higher power. That is the beauty behind this program. Your higher power does not have to be God, just a Higher Power of your own understanding, which can be anything of your specific choosing. Whether it’s a Good Orderly Direction, Group of Drunks, Universal energy, the sun, the moon, the ocean or mother nature. It does not matter, as long as it matters to you. After all, God is merely defined as an omnipotent force that cannot be controlled or truly defined or understood.

The bottom line is to let go of your control because you don’t have it anyway. You are basically ego centric, narcissistic and to naive to see the spiritual experience required to make it through this program. You cannot succeed without giving up control to a higher power of your own understanding.
